We have been preparing for Valentine’s Day in Year 2 by making some Valentine cards to take home and give to family members. Using the method of finger painting, the children have taken great care to try and paint some love hearts for the front of their card. We are then going to write some poems to put inside the cards during our literacy lessons. You can watch a brief video of the cards being made above.
Our celebration theme continued as we helped the rest of the Key Stage 1 children celebrate the Chinese New Year by putting on an assembly this week. We acted out the traditional story of the animal race, with different class members wearing an animal mask. Our assembly explained how each Chinese New Year is named after a different animal. We talked about the 2010 being the Year of the Tiger, and how Chinese people are going to celebrate this event.
We welcomed Lee into our assembly, who gave a talk to the children about what it was like for her as a child during the New Year period in China. Lee told us about the many special foods that Chinese families eat over the New Year period, as well as the wonderful clothes that are worn for this very special occasion. We also learnt some Chinese words to help us celebrate the New Year.
Our assembly finished off with a Chinese themed quiz, to find out what all of the Key Stage 1 children had learnt during their assembly. We gave out traditional Chinese moneybags, as well as animal masks for the children to take home.
