Leanne’s Year 6 class recently staged a very visual school assembly. It was based around our current reading book, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. This tells the story of how Philippe Petit walked a tightrope between the Twin Towers in New York in 1974.
The students have completed some thoughtful written work based around the book. The creative task was to write with a sense of suspense. This idea was then carried forward to our assembly. We wanted our friends to feel the excitement surrounding this event.
This was a very practical assembly. The Year 6 art group had helped to prepare the set. This included a representation of the Twin Towers, as well as the props that were needed to act out the walk.
Narrator responsibilities were shared. All class members had either a narration or acting to role to play. Some confident acting took place at the front of the assembly.
Once the act of the Twin Towers walk had been acted out, other pupils then read out newspaper reports. This all added to the excitement and suspense.
Our Year 6 assembly concluded with Philippe Petit’s message: Believe in the impossible.
