Year 2 Halves, Quarters and Fireworks Poetry!

Year 2 have been learning about the Guy Fawkes story during history lessons. The children have researched who Guy Fawkes was, and why we still remember him each year.

This led to a wonderful fireworks poem being recited. Many different actions and sounds were added to our poem as you can see in the video below.

Elsewhere in Year 2 and the children have been made some great progress with their maths learning. We usually start each lesson counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. A game of maths ping pong is played with a parter. The children take it in turns to count the next number.

Our main fractions topic has been completed. Year 2 are now learning about halves and quarters.

We started this work by defining what we mean by a half and a quarter. A large pizza on the class whiteboard was used to demonstrate the definitions. Class teacher Sally spoke about the importance of having equal amounts of the pizza.

This knowledge was then used to create our own maths pizzas. Questions needed to be answered such as: what is half of eight, or a quarter of twelve. Different toppings were then added to our pizzas.
