Caring for Caterpillars in the Nursery

The Nursery children are continuing with their insects and mini-beasts topic. We have been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to help with this learning.

This has inspired to the children to draw caterpillars as well as create some 3D models using egg boxes. Our Nursery classroom now has a caterpillar model display.

The children are also taking care of five special caterpillars. We are keeping these in a safe, natural habitat. The caterpillars are given the food for the next stage of their metamorphosis.

We are observing the changes each day. The Nursery children are excited about seeing the caterpillars grow into beautiful butterflies.

They have changed into cocoons now. The cocoons are brown. They sometimes move too! We are counting the days until the butterflies emerge.
