Our maths work in Year 3 has been looking at different weights and measures. We have been learning about how 1kg, half a kg and a quarter kg are all related. We set the challenge of asking the pupils to estimate how much rice they think would make the different amounts. We started off with a 1kg, and then we were able to get an idea as to how much was needed for a half and a quarter. Each group had three attempts to try and estimate the correct level.

We found that as we became familiar with the amount required, our estimates became more accurate. The exercise also helped Year 3 to make the connection between each amount, and how halves and quarters can be useful measures during our work. Year 3 returned from a Southwark football tournament this week in great spirit. This was organised at a local sports facility, with five primary schools invited to take part. We put forward three Michael Faraday teams, all based on different ability as well as mixed sex.

We found the opening matches rather tough, but like all great teams, we improved as the tournament progressed. What was really pleasing to see was that our team members responded to the instructions, and were ale to change the style of play as requested.

Tremendous sportsmanship was demonstrated. We were incredibly impressed in the way that our Year 3 pupils proudly represented Michael Faraday. You can find out more about the football tournament in the podcast below.

Year 3 presented a wonderful assembly this week explaining all about the background and significance of Bonfire Night. We wanted to find out why so many people in the UK celebrate the occasion, and what the historical story is behind lighting fireworks. We researched in class about the character of Guy Fawkes, and his attempt to blow up Parliament.

This story was then re-told during our assembly. We introduced to the other Key Stage 2 children the remember, remember, the 5th of November rhyme, and then explained exactly what is meant by treason. We finished off our assembly by encouraging all of our friends to join in with our bonfire poem, as well as to display some of the firework artwork that we have produced.

Year 3 had a great time at Peckham Cinema as part of the National Film Week for Schools. We were very kindly invited to a screening of the third Narnia film. This is a movie quite a complicated plot – it has given us plenty of follow up material to be working on back in the classroom!

We have asked the children to try and recall the plot in sequence and to describe how the tension in the story develops. We have also been interested in the difference between watching a film at the cinema, or viewing it at home on TV.
