Year 5 presented a fantastic Chinese themed assembly for the rest of Key Stage 2 this week. We have been exploring more about the country and the culture during our recent celebrations for the Chinese New Year. Our assembly involved the telling of the traditional Chinese story of Sister Lace. This is a tale that involves passion, wisdom and a magical paper dragon! Having looked at different Chinese stories, Sister Lace is one that stood out strongly for Year 5. You can watch the tale unfolding in the video above.

This has been an incredibly busy period in Year 5 with many different school trips, topics and future visits also being planned! Both classes greatly enjoyed a recent trip to the nearby Shakespeare’s Globe. The Year 4 and Year 5 Ukulele Club was invited to perform at The Globe’s prestigious Concert for Winter. All pupils got to experience the Globe in great detail, as well as the magic of the Winter Concert!

Our Ancient Greece class topic has now been completed, concluding in a trip to the British Museum. We were able to see at first hand some of the many historical artefacts that we have been learning about, including the treasured Elgin Marbles. Some of the other Ancient Greek items inspired our pupils to write some very moving poetry, all about the sights that we managed to see during our British Museum visit.

Other work around Year 5 has included a celebration of the Chinese New Year, as well as preparation for our next major class topic of The Victorians. Our pupils will be comparing their own life’s in modern day London with that of Victorian children who were living around our area. We have also got a trip planned to the Victorian Dickens Museum, to learn more about this fascinating period.

We are coming towards the end of our Ancient Greece topic in Year 5. Having studied in great detail the Adventure of Odysseus, the pupils have now produced a map of Ancient Greece and plotted the route that the main character takes. We have written short pieces to accompany our maps, explaining why it took twenty years for Odysseus to complete his journey, and what problems he encountered along the way.

To complete our Year 5 Ancient Greece topic, both classes are heading out next week to the British Museum. We have been researching ahead of this trip more about the Elgin Marbles, and the historical and cultural importance of these artifacts. We have also been learning about Greek architecture and columns – something that we are hopeful of seeing at the British Museum!

We have been baking some Christmas cookies in Year 5 ahead of our festive end of term celebrations taking place later in the week. Working with the adults, we first planned which ingredients we will need to put in our cookie mixture. We then washed our hands, and carefully measured out the correct amounts of flour, sugar, margarine and flavouring. Once the cookies were baked, Year 5 then iced them with our own special Christmas designs. You can watch a short video of our cooking experience above.

Our Year 5 pupils have been very busy with our rehearsals for the annual Michael Faraday Christmas Performance. We are attempting something slightly different this year with a short performance form Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Our pupils have been learning more about the traditional story and the Christmas message that it presents. Our performance at the concert will include the acting out of a few scenes, as well as singing some traditional Dickens style songs such as God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

As part of our Greek myths and legends topic, Year 5 acted out a superb assembly to put across some of the themes that we have been learning. Using the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops. We explored I great detail all about the problems and difficulties that Odysseus has to overcome.

Having acted out the story, Year 5 asked the other pupils a series of questions relating to the play. We finished our assembly by sharing ideas about how we can overcome our difficulties when we all work together. You can watch a video of the wonderful Year 5 assembly above.
