The Michael Faraday School Councillors have been continuing to meet regularly with our Head Teacher Karen throughout this term to discuss many varied school issues. Each year we elect two Councillors from each class from Year 2 and above. We ask potential candidates to deliver a speech, explaining why they think that they would be able to represent the rest of the class.

The Michael Faraday School Council then meets once a fortnight. Recent meetings have discussed school uniform, school dinners and how we can help to raise money for good causes. The recent devastating events in Japan have focused our thoughts on what we can do here at Michael Faraday to help. The esteemed Michael Faraday School Council held a meeting this week, to discuss some of the issues that lay ahead of the opening of the new school in September. Our democratically elected Councillors meet with the Head Teacher every two weeks, to help generate ideas for future school policy.

On the agenda this week was school uniform and school dinners. There is currently a debate amongst the Councillors about making school uniform compulsory. The official school line is to encourage children to wear school uniform, although it is not yet compulsory. Some Councillors believe that the opening of the new school would be a great opportunity to design a new school uniform, and then possibly make it compulsory.

The debate regarding school dinners is centred on how we can improve these even further. We are incredibly proud of our healthy school status at Michael Faraday, but once again, a new school presents new opportunities. Our esteemed Michael Faraday School Council held a meeting this week to discuss what our school community can do to help the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake. We have all been incredibly moved watching the images on our TV’s at home. The Council members from across Key Stage 2 decided that the school should try and raise some money to help with the global aid effort.

It was suggested by one of our Councillors that maybe we should hold a jumble sale to generate some funds. This was agreed upon by the School Council, and we have now set a date of Friday 29th January for the Michael Faraday Haiti Aid Jumble Sale. Our Councillors believe that this is the ideal time of year in which to collect items to sell. If you have any unwanted Christmas presents, either for children or for adults, our School Council will gladly take these off your hands to sell on. Please bring any donations to the school office.

We are pleased to announce that the new school councillors have been elected for the coming academic year. The role of a school councillor at Michael Faraday is an influential position. We encourage pupil involvement in school policy making decisions through the forum of the school council.

The School Council is an elected assembly made up of two representatives from each class, from Year 2 upwards. The Council members meet up with the Head Teacher on a regular basis, to discuss and help formulate school policy.

Any child is able to stand for election. Class teachers encourage the candidates to campaign and deliver a speech in front of the class, explaining why they believe they would make a good representative for their fellow pupils.

Voting is anonymous, the end result being two elected Councillors. The term of office is for one school year.

Past policy has included activities for children in the playground during break times, the school menu and discussion on school uniform.

Representatives ask their class mates ahead of Council meetings what issues they would like to be raised.

The School Council is a great way for our children to develop their debating skills. Some of the Councilors can push a hard bargain!

Feedback is then given back to the rest of the class. True democracy in action!
