Our Michael Faraday School community has now been settled into our fantastic new building for a term and a half now. The transition has been incredibly smooth, with the teaching and day-to-day school routine now firmly established. All of the feedback that we have received from pupils and parents has been incredibly positive. Many thanks to all within our community for enabling such a smooth transition.

The success story of the new school building isn’t quite finished though. Work is now well underway on the state of the art sports action zone that will replace the old school playground. As you can see from the pictures below – the surface has been cleared and the early foundations for this amazing new facility are almost ready to be dug.

When complete, the sports action zone will be able to offer a safe and competitive environment for all of our school sporting activities. This is expected to be completed by the start of the new school year. Until then, you can have fun by looking at the pictures below, and then trying to work out exactly where all of the old classrooms were once based.

Sport Relief has been a huge success at Michael Faraday! We have staged themed activities each lunchtime, with adults kindly giving up their time to help put on these events. The obstacle course was very popular, and we found some very talented cheerleaders. It was great to see the elder pupils helping out the younger children during the skipping session. Over £100 has been raised from these lunchtime activities alone.

The grand event however has been the Walk a Mile that we staged at nearby Burgess Park at the end of the week. All pupils were encouraged to wear red for Sport Relief. Year 6 mapped out the mile, and the whole school spent a great morning over at Burgess.

We concluded our week of fund raising and sporting activity with the annual staging of the Faraday Tigers Vs the Faraday All Stars football match. This friendly fixture matches up our trophy winning school football team against some adult sporting staff, who perhaps have seen better days.

The whole school came out to celebrate and support our fundraising efforts. Many of the children had made their own cheerleading pom poms, adding a fun atmosphere to the occasion. All children and staff at Michael Faraday are extremely excited about the grand plans that we have for Sports Relief! An entire week of sporting events has been planned, to help raise money for Sports Relief, as well as to improve our fitness. A different sporting session will take place each lunchtime, under the expert guidance of various staff members. Children can pay the small amount of 50p towards Sports Relief, to take part in each activity. The timetable is as follows:

Monday – cheerleading

Tuesday – obstacle course

Wednesday – hoola hoop-a-thon

Thursday – skipping

Sports Relief will come to a grand finale at Michael Faraday on Friday. We have a major event planned where we are challenging all Michael Faraday children and staff to run or walk the Sports Relief Mile. The entire school will spend the morning at Burgess Park for the event. Year 6 will be using their maths knowledge to measure out the exact mile distance.

Our friend Wilson from Bacon’s College has very kindly volunteered his time to help with the warm-up. Sponsorship forms for the Sports Relief Mile will be sent home with the children before the end of the week.

We are also inviting children to come to school on Friday 19th March wearing the Sports Relief colour of red. A small donation of £1 towards Sports Relief will help us to raise extra funds. Finally, Sports Relief will come to a close at Michael Faraday on Friday with an afternoon football match.

We are confident that Sports Relief week will be a huge success at Michael Faraday, as well as tremendous fun! Please become involved.

Congratulations to our fantastic Michael Faraday football team! Our mixed team of players managed to make it all the way to the final of a competition this term, narrowly losing against our friends from St Paul’s School. This is the first time that a team from Michael Faraday has made it all the way to a grand final!

The Year 5 and Year 6 players have been playing in a league system with eleven other schools throughout the term. The games are organised by our friends from Bacon’s College, with the aim to play fairly and have fun. Winning also helps, something which our team have been doing plenty of!

After finishing towards the top of the league, we then played a knock out quarter and semi-final. Nerves were high for the big match, but St Paul’s proved to be slightly stronger. Our team represented Michael Faraday in an outstanding manner. We all came away with runners up medals and certificates.

The Michael Faraday football team will be in action once again after the half term break. We are involved in a competition based at the nearby Burgess Park, organised by Millwall FC. Many thanks to >Siobhan and Fatima, our brilliant team manager and coach.

The Michael Faraday Tigers football team has been back in action this week, taking the good name of the school across the borough, and challenging some of our friends from nearby schools.

Under expert coaching guidance, a series of team trials were staged for the new school year. Our coaches were scouting for team members who could demonstrate expert football skills, as well as being able to represent Michael Faraday as a brilliant team player.

All of our players approached the trials with the right attitude, and we are pleased to have picked a squad of boys and girls who can represent the good name of the school.

Our first fixture is taking place later in the week at nearby Bacon’s College. Once again we are most grateful to Wilson at Bacon’s, who has been helping us to organise matches with other Southwark schools.

Initially we are playing a series of friendly matches. We are hopeful of entering the Faraday Tigers into a league later on this season.

Year 6 have spent their PE sessions this week practising their hockey skills. We have been learning about the correct way to hold a hockey stick in order to give us the best control.

The children then improved their dribbling skills, remembering to use only one side of the stick in order to control the puck.
