We have been having great fun exploring the new Numicon resources in the Michael Faraday Nursery. This is a learning tool that helps children across all ages with their mathematical skills. Numicon is a physical means in which children can visualise numbers.
It works at the Early Years stage in terms of counting skills, as well as all the way through KS1 and KS2 when other mathematical operations are being taught. We are using this system to great success in the Nursery. The plan is to then introduce Numicon as a teaching resource throughout Michael Faraday School.
The Nursery children have been exploring what it means when we say a number such as three, and then match this up with the physical representation of this number. Number allows the children to actually touch and feel the numbers. It is also great for sorting different shapes and colours.
A great start!
