Our main theme during our Year 1 maths lessons has been to understand what it means to sort different shapes. The children came up with a definition that involves putting items or objects into a group so that they all have something similar.
Working with 2D shapes, Year 1 talked about some of the identifiable features that we can find. These may be the colour of the shape, the number of sides or the number of corners.
We developed these ideas into a simple game. We came up with a couple of descriptions – three corners or less, and four corners or more – and then asked the Year 1 pupils to sort the shapes that we are working with. You can find out more about this by watching the video above.
