Year 3 have recently received a very special letter in the post – from the family of the Iron Man! We have been reading the brilliant book throughout the spring term. The pupils have become fascinated by the character, and wanted to know more about his background. The letter from his family on another planet asked many questions about his time on earth. Year 3 were able to reply back, explaining how the Iron Man is enjoying his visit.
We encouraged all pupils to write a letter and to think about how the Iron Man must be feeling. He has had a few problems to encounter and some challenges to overcome. We wanted to explain this information to his family in a sensitive manner. You can listen to a couple of the Year 3 letters being read out in the audioboo below.
Our maths work in Year 3 has introduced the pupils to pictorial diagrams. We are all familiar with tally charts and displaying data in graphs. The children are now also able to work with a pictorial diagram to help represent a data set.
We have held class discussions explaining why this approach is a great way to represent numbers. Anyone looking at the diagram can see a representation of what has been counted. Year 3 devised a simple study to see what mode of transport pupils to travel to school use. Answers included walking, cycling, by car or by bus. We were then able to think of a suitable picture to represent each category for our diagram.
