Our science topic in Year 1 for the start of the summer term is forces and movement. The aim is for the children to be able to identify a particular force, and then to see how we use these during our everyday lives.
To help us start with our exploration, each Year 1 class visited the nearby park. We encouraged the children to play on as many different types of apparatus as possible. These included swings, climbing frames and slides.
Back in the classroom and we started to think about how we were able to move whilst on the many different types of apparatus. Friends helped to push us on the swings; we pulled ourselves up on to the climbing frame and pushed ourselves off on the slide.
We have learnt from this simple exercise that forces are incredibly important when it comes movement. We explained our work by drawing a series of diagrams from the park visit, and then labeling where each force was found.
