Year 2 have been researching the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole during our current history lessons. We have been looking at how both women were incredibly influential in changing the practice that we now know as nursing, as well being strong female role models in what was once a male dominated profession.
The pupils have been learning about the dangerous medical conditions that existed before both Florence and Mary were able to achieve great improvements. We have asked the children to find out exactly what it is that makes both women so famous and why are they still role models in modern day nursing?
We have also been looking at some of the differences between the two nurses. These include their social backgrounds and some of the personal struggles that they had to overcome to achieve the recognition that they now hold.
All pupils have also produced a storyboard showing some of the main events in the life of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. You can listen to some further thoughts on our Year 2 work in the recording below.
