The new Nursery children at Michael Faraday School are making wonderful progress in reading Handa’s Surprise. This is a book that tells the story of a girl and the many exotic fruits that she carries around on her head.
We have held a fruit tasting session with the children to explore the taste and feel of some of the fruits that we might not be familiar with. Nursery have been sampling mangos, pineapples and avocados. We have encouraged the children to describe the taste of each fruit, as well as thinking about the texture. Do we need to peel the fruit? Is it a hard or a soft feel?
Handa’s Surprise has also been providing the inspiration to help the Nursery children with their early counting skills. We have been counting how many items of fruit we can find in our basket. Some fruit has been added, and then some taken away. The children have been counting the fruit remaining at each stage.
We have also been playing some memory games with the basket of fruit. We asked the children to look at the types of fruit before one was taken away. Our task was to identify what was missing. You can watch this game being played in the video above.
