Year 5 have been using drama and acting to help to empathise with some of the characters in Skellig, our current class reading book. The pupils have been keen to learn more about the character of Michael and how he must feel when starting a new school. We have held class conversations about what it is like to be a new boy or girl, and how we can help to make any new friends feel welcome.
We set up a number of scenarios in which Year 5 could explore some role-play. These included walking to school with all of the other children chatting, being introduced to the new class and how it must feel at home time when all of the other children leave in their friendship groups.
These scenes were acted out to help us explore the character of Michael in more detail. We paused each scene at certain places, and then asked other class members to step forward and add some thoughts.
