Year 6 have produced some incredibly moving pieces of poetry following our recent trip to the nearby Heygate Estate. This is a large housing area near Elephant and Castle that is due to be regenerated. The flats are all now empty, leaving a feeling of a temporary ghost town ahead of the building of new homes.
The pupils were particularly interested in the way that the space once had plenty of life and energy, and now it is empty of human life. Many of the old furniture and fittings remain. We extended this idea to think about what it might be like if the physical objects had feelings. How would they describe the current condition of the Heygate estate?
Year 6 have been learning how this type of poetry is described as personification. Using a series of photographs captured during our Heygate visit, the pupils have produced some thoughtful written work about the redevelopment of the estate.
