Year 6 Martin Luther King Assembly

Year 6

Year 6 recently staged a passionate assembly exploring the reasons as to why so many people around the world have just celebrated Martin Luther King Day. We welcomed our friends from others classes into our assembly by playing We Shall Overcome. We then invited ideas as to what the meaning behind the song might be. A great answer was that we can make things better in a peaceful way. This set the tone for the rest of the assembly.

The Year 6 pupils have been researching online all about Martin Luther King. Our work took a geographical twist when we discovered that we need to understand a little more about the American Civil War to be able to see how racial segregation was still in place in some southern US States in the 1960’s.

Year 6

Our assembly then covered some drama and role-play with significant events in the life of Martin Luther King being acted out. We showed how the young Martin Luther was segregated from white children at school. We then showed how the non-violent message of Gandhi was so important to him when he reached college.

A selection of pupils then acted out the story of Ruby Bridges and her teacher Mrs. Henry. This is a wonderful example of how the non-violent actions of a young schoolgirl can so bravely stand up to racial segregation.

Year 6 concluded the Martin Luther King assembly by displaying some placards that we have produced. We wanted the pupils to put across a positive message, and to think of a slogan that captures what human rights we should all be entitled to. We played the video above as a final message to help remember Martin Luther King.
