We are incredibly pleased to announce that Year 4 won the recent Battle of the Bands competition staged at the prestigious South Bank Centre. This was an open competition for all primary schools in Southwark. The aim was to showcase the many musical talents within the borough, as well as to help to raise the confidence levels of the musicians by giving them access to the South Bank facilities.
Michael Faraday’s contribution for Battle of the Bands involved using the many ukulele skills that the children have been learning during the weekly sessions with Lorraine, our ukulele tutor. Pauline was the Musical Director for Battle of the Bands. An ambitious programme was selected, including an acapella version of We Will Rock You, and then ukulele performances of Wild Thing and Blue Suede Shoes.
This was a wonderful learning experience for the Michael Faraday pupils. As well as being able to watch and appreciate the other performers, we were also treated to a professional musical workshop by Life of Empire, a young band from the Brit School of Performing Arts.
The boys in the band taught the Michael Faraday pupils how to play Reptiles, a new track from the band. We were given expert tuition in guitar, drums and vocals.
It was then soon time for the competing schools to take to the South Bank stage and try and impress the judges. These were made up of various professionals working within the music industry. The competition was tough. We were particularly impressed with the steel band performers, as well as some of the more rock related young bands.
The judges were clearly impressed with Michael Faraday School. The final results led to Year 4 being crowned the winners of the 2014 Battle of the Bands! We returned back to school with an impressive trophy and a great sense of achievement in representing our school.
All pupils have since written to our friends from Life of Empire, thanking them for their dedicated professional support. The band even mentioned us on the own Facebook page! You can watch some short clips of Year 4 performing at Battle of the Bands in the video below.
