Year 5 have been working closely with our friends from the London Wildlife Trust to help construct a willow dome within the school playground. This is a very practical exercise that will also have some real benefits. Once built, the dome will become a living structure that can be used by the younger children to play in during the spring and summer terms.
Badgie’s class put the groundwork in place by digging deep for the willow branches to bed down. We had to make sure that the holes were deep enough to create a strong structure.
Once the foundations were ready, the intricate work was carried out by Pat’s Class. The pupils were given the role of weaving the smaller pieces of willow in and out of the bare structure that had been built.
We were all surprised to find out that this will be a living structure. Even though the willow branches that we have used have already been cut from a tree, they will soon start to grow once again and add some life to our new Year 5 project.
