The Reception children have been introduced to the idea of coins and money during our maths lessons. We have been exploring different coins during our class circle time. Different coin values were shared within our small groups. We asked the children to think about the size, the shape and the colour of each coin. We talked about when and where we might use them.
A surprise visitor then joined our session – the Tooth Fairy! The Reception children are now at an age when they might be starting to lose teeth. Waking up and finding that you have had a visit from the Tooth Fairy is a very special feeling!
We played a game with the children to help us with our knowledge and recognition of coins. A member of the class volunteered to fall asleep with a large tooth placed underneath their pillow. Once they were asleep along came another friend acting out the role of the Tooth Fairy. A coin was left underneath the pillow, in return for the taking away of the tooth.
When it was time to wake up we looked underneath the pillow and then described the coin that had been left. What does it look like? How much is it worth? How is it different in value from the other coins that some sleepy friends received?
Our coin work in Reception will continue over the coming weeks. We will start to add up different values of coins. We will also continue with the role-play by acting out some shopkeeper situations.
You can catch the visit of the Reception Tooth Fairy in the video above.
