Year 5 have been writing their own musical compositions based around a traditional playground song. Working under the guidance of our expert musical tutor Liz, the pupils have used Salt, Mustard, Vinegar, Pepper as the stimulus to create something completely new.

Liz has helped Year 5 to build in different textures and layers to the compositions. We have been understanding what is meant by the musical term ostinato, and how this can help to add something a little different to our songs.

The pupils worked in small groups whilst thinking of their preferred musical direction. We encouraged an active imagination and a free rein when it came to the final composition. Liz and the other teaching staff certainly weren’t disappointed when every group was able to deliver a totally new and unique interpretation of Salt, Mustard, Vinegar, Pepper.

We are proud to present some of the recordings below.
Plus: here is Year 5 coming together at the end of the session to sing the original version of Salt, Mustard, Vinegar, Pepper.
