The Year 2 children at Michael Faraday School have just started a cross curriculum topic based around the country of Brazil. This has been themed around the Summer Olympics that will be taking place in Rio. The country and its culture will be explored across the curriculum.
English work will involve a fact file being written by each class member. We have been looking at the idea of non-fiction, and how this differs to our usual story books. The children have been asked to use headings and sub-headings in their reports.
Data handling will form the maths element for our Brazil topic. Year 2 will be comparing the growth levels of plants in Brazil with the vegetables that we have recently grown in our own Michael Faraday garden.
Geography work will involve the children exploring the Amazon rain forest. We will be looking at the different layers in this environment, and seeing how these are suitable for some animals, but not for others.
Finally our Brazil topic will come to a close with a Carnival! We are looking forward to a Carnival workshop later on in the term. The Year 2 children will have the opportunity to design and make their own head dresses and costumes. We will also be preparing some Brazilian style food to enjoy.
You can listen to one of the pupils sharing her early research on Brazil in the short recording below.
