Year 6 Drama and African Drumming

The Year 6 pupils at Michael Faraday School have been introduced to the fascinating character that is Bradley Chalkers. We have started work on reading the wonderful There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom book.

Our understanding of the story has been helped by some drama activity being carried out based on the book. There are many different characters to explore. We have also looked at why the role of the narrator is so important.

Small groups of pupils have been preparing different scenes from the book. The students were asked to work independently and decide who will play each role. These short scenes were then shared amongst our friends. Feedback and reviews were then provided.

Elsewhere in Year 6 and Rebecca’s Class has started work on a term long project learning all about African drumming. This is hands on approach with Sandra and Lee from Southwark Music Services kindly visiting our school each week.

The first session started off with an introduction to the different types of African drums that we will be playing. The pupils were shown the many sounds and names that are given to some of the drum patterns.

The session then developed into a call and response activity. Sandra and Lee led the way, and then the pupils followed their actions. We are hopeful that this learning will lead to an African drumming concert at the close of the project.
