Year 5 have started an exciting art project themed around our current Ancient Greek history learning. The pupils have a Key Stage 2 assembly coming up. It has been decided that we will act out some of the Ancient Greek stories that we have been learning. Some suitable masks are needed for this – the perfect opportunity to be creative during out art lessons!
Our Ancient Greek research has seen how theatre was very important for the Ancient Greeks. Different masks were used to help tell the emotions in some of the stories. Each class member was given a choice to design and create a mask that displayed emotions such as happy, angry, shock and evil.
Balloons were blown up as the starting point for the masks. The Year 5 pupils then drew in their designs, and then added in paper mache to sculpt some of the facial features. The next step will be to add further paper mache to surround the remainder of the masks. Once this has dried, the balloons will be burst, and the masks can be painted for use in our assembly.
