Both Year 3 classes recently enjoyed a maths work shop. Steven from The Problem Solving Company introduced an idea based on Escape Rooms.
A series of wooden boxes within wooden boxes was presented to each group. Each box contained a padlock. We had to crack the code by working through some maths problems.
No instructions were given. The pupils were asked to use evidence and logic to solve the problems. Steven explained that it would be a waste of time to try and undo a lock without having any evidence.
The Year 3 pupils found this a fantastic and fun exercise. We worked together in small teams. It soon became clear that maths knowledge needn’t be learnt. We can solve problems by working out the answers from the evidence in front of us.
