Year 4 have been solving some complex maths fractions. The aim behind this work was to understand the reasons that led to our answers. Class teacher Sophie has been helping the pupils to think through the steps needed to come up with the correct answers.
The children have been working in small groups to share their ideas. The starting point is to understand the question that is being asked.
One recent example involved two prize funds. Prize A was three quarters of £48, with Prize B being two-sixths of £60. The challenge was to work out which prize had the highest value.
Sophie asked the pupils to present their answers as part of a complete sentence. The reasoning behind the calculations had to be explained along with the final answer.
