Year 5 are writing newspaper reports based around Shackleton’s Journey. The class members are very familiar with the story. The challenge was to recount the events in the style that we read in a daily newspaper.
The pupils planned their work by thinking about the features we can find in a newspaper report. We discussed the importance of writing in paragraphs and including all the facts.
Class teachers Sophie and Elspeth also asked the children to include fronted adverbials. An example of this is a sentence which starts:
Early in the morning,
Each stage of our news reports were planned. We talked about the importance of having an introduction that draws the reader in with the main parts of the story. Further information then follows as the report develops.
